What retail and e-commerce operators use it for

  • Inventory purchase orders and deposits on overseas production
  • Customs duty and freight due before the goods sell
  • Media spend ahead of a launch or a seasonal push
  • Payroll through the gap between cash out and cash in
  • Buying out a supplier's stock at a discount
  • Bridging a marketplace reserve or an extended settlement hold

Worked example

A four-year-old seller doing $180,000 a month in deposits places a $175,000 inventory buy with a 45% gross margin and a 90-day sell-through. We advance $175,000. Total cost of funding at that term is roughly $31,500 — about 18% of the amount advanced. The buy generates roughly $318,000 in revenue and about $143,000 in gross profit, so the cost of funding consumes about 22% of the profit the buy produces. Paid off at day 75, the prepayment discount returns up to 30% of the remaining cost.

Working Capital — questions

How is the amount sized?

Against your average monthly business bank deposits across all accounts and all channels, typically 1x to 1.5x of a month's deposits for a first position, more once you have a repayment history with us.

Is my inventory collateral?

No. Working capital at Shelfline is unsecured. Fulfilment-centre and in-transit inventory are not pledged.

Can I take this if I already have a platform advance outstanding?

Yes. Tell your underwriter the balance and the remittance rate and we size around it.

What is the remittance schedule?

Fixed daily or weekly ACH from your business operating account. It does not vary with your sales and it is not taken at the terminal or from a settlement balance.

Is there a prepayment penalty?

No. The opposite — pay off early and you keep up to 30% of the remaining cost.
